According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an estimated 43 million Americans will face vision loss or blindness from age-related eye diseases in 2020. During September, Central Florida Eye Specialists celebrates Healthy Aging Month by bringing eye-healthy tips to our patients. We recommend that adults follow these eye health habits:
Get a Comprehensive Eye Exam
During this eye exam, your eye doctor will check more than how well you see. He or she will also check for signs of common age-related eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. None of these conditions have noticeable symptoms early on. If a disease is identified, an eye doctor can track it and provide treatment to help prevent it from getting worse.
Share Your Family History with Your Eye Doctor
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataracts, and other eye diseases can be inherited. Knowledge of past and present family eye disorders can help save your vision!
Quit Smoking
Quitting smoking is one of the best investments you can make in your eye and overall health. The American Cancer Society has resources to help people who want to quit: www.cancer.org.
Eat Healthy
Studies have shown that some foods are good for eye health as well as general health. Eat healthy and include citrus fruits, vegetable oils, dark green leafy greens, and cold-water fish such as salmon and tuna to your plate.
Central Florida Eye Specialists is your eye doctor to help you on your healthy aging journey to fight against age-related vision symptoms long before you reach the golden years. We wish our patients prosperity that they AGE WELL, LIVE WELL, and SEE WELL.
